As you know, I am Brandon Meyer. And this is where my journey began….
It was the year of 2012, 12 February 2012 to be exact. I was hired for a role as a support consultant at “Talenger Holdings”. My roles and responsibilities included anywhere from answering phone calls and replying to emails as and when a support request came in or if it was just a simple query. Other duties included were to update and maintain user manuals and assist in useability of the software and translate findings to the developers.
While I was employed by Talenger holdings I became friends with the I.T director (Adam Cumming) who was also the lead developer. During my breaks, I sat with Adam and became intensely intrigued by the whole entirety of the web development world.
This is where my inner fire for web design and graphic design first ignited. Adam assisted me in getting started with web design and also enlightened me about the simple side of graphic design.
At the time, Talenger as well as the sister company “PeoplePlus” used a CMS system called Drupal. (in my terms, referred to as the old outdated version of WordPress). Adam gave me a copy of the system to familiarize myself and to find ways to renovate and improve the current sites they had up and running to figure out and educate myself with how things work.
I did research and studied all I could, as much as I could by myself. After a week or two went by, I was over the moon with what I managed to achieve with the minimal help I received in such short time getting to know how HTML, CSS and JavaScript all gelled as one, and then having that plugged into a CMS system.
I was very excited to show Rodney De Villiers the “CEO” what I had managed to do in my own time. Rodney appraised me and set my feet on a positive path. (this feedback made me ecstatic).
Then…
Rodney got onto an idea to start a new platform called “myHR” a platform for a B2B meetup as well as a business directory. At the time, the inhouse developers had their plates full with the HR & Payroll systems. So, we hired a 3rd freelance developer to assist with the build of the platform.
I was put in charge of this project. This is where I was recognized for my hunger and drive for web design. I did all graphics and design of the site. Unfortunately, the site never kicked off as planned.
But… My story didn’t end there. As my knowledge and skillset advanced, so did my drive to be more. More than a support consultant that just answers phone calls and replying to emails.
I requested to redo the current websites for both Talenger as well as PeoplePlus to increase my knowledge and to build something I can be proud of.
My request was approved and this became my first solo flight into the world wide web as a graphic web designer. I set out to completely rebuild the Talenger and PeoplePlus site.
Rodney and myself had a tennis match of ideas and sat closely together to achieve not only what suited us, but what benefitted its users. It was a success (the sites are still currently running as I had built them back in 2014).
This is the part where you click on the contact link and get in touch. I would love to elaborate on what I ventured on to next.
